MASTER CLASS: Stone Setting 

Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th March 2024

£190.00 plus materials (material costs of approx £45.00 paid directly to your tutor on first day of course)

Course aims:
In this two day course, students will be given step-by-step instructions on how to make elegant settings for faceted or cabochon stones. The course will cover basic setting techniques to produce rub over collets. Detailed hand-outs will be provided which can be kept and are a good bench reference.

The course is aimed at intermediate / advanced makers, not for beginners. Sawing, filing, soldering knowledge is necessary. Students who have some experience in jewellery will find this course challenging and informative.

Learning outcomes:
Students will learn to produce collets for different stone shapes and gain basic rub-over setting skills.

Day 1: Brief introduction to properties of gemstones and stone setting types. The focus of the first day will be on producing bezel settings for three different stone shapes and how to make these settings accurately. We will also practice setting a round stone.

Day 2: During the second day we will focus on the technique of flush setting. This is a slightly different technique in which small faceted stones are set flush with the surrounding metal. We will be producing a few test pieces and a pendant in silver.

Your tutor:
Hendrike Barz-Meltzer: Hendrike is a contemporary jewellery designer and maker who works in a variety of techniques and materials, such as precious metals, recycled plastic or silk, which she makes into delicate Kumihimo braids that are incorporated in her work.

Material and technical considerations are guided by environmental and ethical thinking to produce jewellery that is not only beautiful but has also been created responsibly.

Hendrike’s work is exhibited in a number of exhibitions and galleries, such Contemporary Applied Arts, London and she takes part in fairs such as MADE London.

Her interest in ethical concepts has greatly influenced her creative work, believing firmly in the idea of ‘giving back’ to society and passing on knowledge. This is evidenced by her various teaching engagements and her commitment to producing responsible jewellery.

A maximum of eight places are available on this course, with a minimum of six participants required for the course to run. Full payment is required to secure a place.
